Exacerbation of Acute Pain in Combat Situations

· March 25, 2025

Vasyl Horoshko, MD, PhD

Pain is an unavoidable aspect of combat injuries, but its management is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness and improving long-term outcomes for wounded personnel. This course, based on the material of Vasyl Horoshko, Postgraduate Researcher from the Department of Surgery Anesthesiology, and Intensive Medicine of Bogomolets National Medical University in Kyiv, provides a structured approach to understanding pain, its chronic implications, and the best practices for treatment in military and emergency settings.

The course is divided into three key lessons:

  1. Definition of Pain and Course Overview – This lesson establishes a foundational understanding of pain, differentiating between acute and chronic pain, and providing an overview of the course structure. We will explore how pain is perceived, its physiological and psychological dimensions, and why effective pain management is critical in combat situations.
  2. Chronic Pain in the Injured – Combat injuries can lead to persistent pain long after the initial trauma has healed. This lesson delves into the key facts concerning chronic pain, including prevalence, causes and longterm effects.
  3. Treatment of Chronic Pain – Managing chronic pain requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this lesson, we will examine various treatment options, from pharmacological interventions and physical therapy to psychological strategies and emerging pain management techniques suitable for military and post-deployment care.

By the end of this course, participants will have a deeper understanding of pain mechanisms in combat scenarios, its progression into chronic conditions, and the best practices for mitigating and treating pain to improve recovery and quality of life for affected individuals.
