Introduction to Staff Care and Burnout Prevention

Burnout, a condition rooted in chronic high-intensity stress, poses significant risks to the mental, physical and professional well-being of workers, especially in healthcare professions. This course gives participants the opportunity to explore the causes and consequences of burnout and, most importantly, to equip themselves with practical tools and strategies to prevent it. By understanding the dynamics of stress, identifying its sources, and learning how to manage it effectively, healthcare professionals can maintain their resilience, safeguard their health, and continue making a meaningful impact in their field.

Course Structure

This course is divided into 7 modules:

Introduction to Staff Care and Burnout Prevention

Module 1: Conceptual framework of burnout

  • Definition of burnout
  • Risk factors contributing to burnout
  • Early signs and symptoms of burnout
  • Self-care and coping strategies for burnout prevention

Module 2: Work-related interventions

  • Effective time management for balance and productivity
  • How to enhance teamwork through clear and supportive communication

Module 3: Demand reduction strategies

  • Stress-reinforcing thinking patterns and their impact on burnout
  • How to set boundaries and reduce demands
  • Practical exercises to challenge unhelpful cognitive habits

Module 4: Self-care essentials – eat, sleep, exercise and socialise

  • Healthy eating habits, mindful eating, and hydration
  • Sleep hygiene tips for improving sleep quality and duration
  • Benefits of physical exercise for resilience and mental health
  • Impact of social connections on reducing burnout and stress

Module 5: Coping strategies

  • Breathing exercises & mindfulness techniques
  • Non-judgmental observation of emotions to reduce overwhelm
  • Self-help techniques
  • Practical steps to integrate coping techniques into daily life

Module 6: Mindfulness techniques

  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques for stress relief
  • Guided imagery meditation
  • Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR)
  • Non-judgmental perception and self-help exercises
  • Practical steps to integrate mindfulness into daily life

Module 7: Implementation of a balanced lifestyle

  • The three-step process to build a balanced lifestyle
  • How to overcome potential challenges to self-care practices

Who developed this course?

This training was developed as part of the SOLOMIYA project. This project aims at strengthening health services in Ukraine in the areas of mental health, emergency care and traumatology, as well as medical care through drug delivery. Their network comprises 34 participating institutions and is coordinated by the Charité University Hospital Berlin. SOLOMIYA is supported by the GIZ Hospital Partnerships Funding Program and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
