Module 1: Conceptual framework of burnout

· January 17, 2025

This first module of the Staff Care and Burnout Prevention Course provides a theoretical foundation on burnout, guiding participants through four lessons on its early warning signs, risk factors, symptoms, and impacts on mental and physical well-being. Participants will also explore evidence-based prevention strategies and interventions to mitigate its effects. Using a blended approach of structured lectures, real-world case studies, and self-reflection exercises, the module connects theory to practical application, empowering participants to identify and address burnout in themselves and their colleagues.

As with the entire course, this module is self-paced to accommodate the demanding schedules of healthcare practitioners. However, following the lesson sequence and completing the suggested exercises is highly recommended for a comprehensive understanding and effective real-life implementation.

Module Content

This module is divided into 4 lessons:

  • Lesson 1: Understanding burnout

In this lesson, participants are introduced to the definition of burnout. They are invited to reflect on how burnout can derive from an imbalance between external or internal demands and the personal resources.

  • Lesson 2: Risk factors, early signs and symptoms of burnout

In this lesson, participants are presented to the 7 main risk factors of burnout, to its early signs and main symptoms. A real-life example is provided for a better understanding of it.

  • Lesson 3: Consequences and interventions

In this lesson, the consequences of burnout on the physical and mental well-being of healthcare professionals are presented, together with the most effective psychotherapeutic interventions to fight burnout symptoms. At the end of the module, participants are invited to carry out two self-reflection exercises.

  • Lesson 4: Introduction to self-care and coping strategies

In this lesson, participants receive a first overview on the differences between self-care and coping strategies, and are invited to complete two more exercises before starting a new module.
